The BCIRPU is saddened by the news that Dr. Jack Taunton, an international figure in sports medicine and Professor Emeritus in the UBC Faculty of Medicine’s Department of Family Practice, has passed away.

Dr. Taunton’s many achievements have been documented in the BC Sports Hall of Fame. He had a monumental impact on the running world, having founded what is now the BMO Vancouver International Marathon. In the field of sports medicine, he left his mark in big ways—co-founding the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre at UBC, working as team doctor for Team Canada at eight Olympic games—and small—being a kind and positive force among his colleagues. Dr. Taunton received the Order of Canada earlier this year.

“Jack was an inspiration to everyone that knew him, and he contributed significantly and unselfishly to the lives of many, including myself,” said BCIRPU director Dr. Shelina Babul.

“It was an honour to call Jack my mentor, colleague, and a friend who shaped my life and academic trajectory. No matter what I needed, Jack was always there to help. The BCIRPU extends our condolences to Cheryl and his family.”
